ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Around 10:45 p.m. Monday night, shots rang out on the 1500 block of Hogan street but officers who arrived over half an hour later found nothing.
Nine hours later, a body was found blocks away Tuesday morning.
St. Louis City Police Chief Robert Tracy says several calls were ongoing at the same time this call came in and the lack of information regarding a victim deprioritized the call.
"We get shots fired, we usually get a few hundred a week. If there's a further call that there might be possibly a person injured it raises the priority [or] if someone shows up at the hospital, that didn't happen." Chief Tracy adds, "we had several calls going on at that time."
Chief Tracy says when officers did respond to the location shot spotter indicated was the source of the gunfire they canvased the area and found no victim.
"Our officers did respond, they did a canvas, they made sure that they looked around in the area but sometimes when someone gets shot at one location they sometimes go to the hospital and then we have to reverse back to find the scene."
Chief Tracy cautioned it is an ongoing homicide investigation but adds it is possible the victim was shot in one location and died in another but cautioned this is an ongoing investigation.
"This person, where he was shot might not be where he was found and succumbed to his injuries," adding "that's still early, I don't want to take away from my detectives and my homicide investigation."
