A new study from Pew Research has some insight into how the religious landscape might change in the U.S. over the next 50 years.
Currently, about 64% of Americans consider themselves Christian, while people who are religiously unaffiliated account for about 30% of the population. But Pew Senior Researcher Stephanie Kramer says it appears a big change is coming.
"Based on our demographic projections, Christians are set to decline below 50% share of the population by 2070 if recent trends in religious switching continue," Kramer said.
The religiously unaffiliated will pick up steam, growing to between 41-52% of the population. Adherents of all other religions, including Judaism, Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism account for about six percent of the population.
