St. Louis, MO (KMOX) - The tall task of reworking the St. Louis City Charter is underway, as the Charter Commission held its first meeting Wednesday evening.

The Commission is setting out on a course to modernize how City government operates.

Anna Crosslin is on the 9 member panel, and says dividing local government responsibilities is among the first challenges. "The City of St. Louis is so old, that it existed before county structures came into being." St. Louis handles both City and County responsibilities. "Some responsibilities that in some cities that you might see actually being part of city structure are actually part of the county structure in this case," explained Crosslin at Wednesday night's meeting.

The Commission agreed to meet the first Wednesday of every month at 4:30 as they labor to rework the 19th Century charter.

Voters approved establishment of the Charter Commission in April of this year. St. Louis' charter was created in 1914. According to the Commission website, any change to the charter would require the approval of voters.
