ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - A new Mayor of Saint Louis and a new public safety director. Shawn Dace, is a retired Saint Louis Police Major, he replaces Charles Coyle immediately.
Dace retired from the St. Louis Police Department in February of 2025 after serving since 1980.
Dace tells KMOX, he first met Mayor Cara Spencer in 2015 when she was an alderwoman and he was a newly appointed Captain in the Third District. "we did a lot of projects on Cherokee Street, uh she was very influential in a men's basketball program I had put together, I just found her to be very transparent, a lot of energy and really focusing on diversity."
Dace says he has some ideas on programs that will hopefully make an impact on crime and traffic, which continues to be a problem in the City. He wants to focus on some of the basic rules of law.
Several other departments fall under the umbrella of Public Safety, such as the building division and City Justice Center.
Dace says zeroing in on making Saint Louis an ideal place for people wanting to work is where it starts. He also wants to increase recruitment efforts
