Even though state curriculums are mandated at the state-level and not the federal-level... the majority of U.S. states leave the lesson up to the local school districts.

"Only 14 states require teaching about 9/11," said Chris Meek, Founder and Chairman of the 9/11 Legacy Foundation. "So that leaves 36 states, which is 72% of our country."

Meek said Illinois requires schools to teach about the terrorist attack, but Missouri does not.

He said in most states, the event is not taught. And if it is, it's a half-day lesson.

"More than half the nation wasn't born or was under the age of 10. There was a study done over Memorial Day Weekend with some Gen Z-ers in California, and more of them knew about Pearl Harbor than they did about 9/11."

Meek said there's a push for federal solution from some entities and D.C. lawmakers, especially now, as America 250 celebrations ramp up American's patriotism.

"We're finalizing a curriculum right now, which we will propose to the Department of Education in Washington," Meek said. "That'll give more resources to school district's across the country to choose from."
