People who have been forced to leave their homes due to recent flooding may qualify for property tax relief.
Steven Weber is a partner at property tax consulting firm PAR Residental. He told KMOX that state law allows homeowners in St. Louis County and St. Charles County to apply for a reduction or rebate for the time they could not live in their homes due to a natural disaster.
"If they just had basement flooding and they lived in the house throughout the cleanup, that would not apply," Weber said.
He pointed out that the provision doesn't apply to the assesment on the land itself, rather, it focuses on the building on the land.
He added that it would be helpful for people to have photographs, insurance estimates, repair bills or other proof that their home was uninhabitable for a period of time. He said people should contact their county assessor for more information.
