Do trackers help find stolen cars? A Metro East mom found out

A mother in the Metro East shared a frustrating story with KMOX: Both her son and daughter had their cars stolen last month. Her son's car has a tracker -- but does that help recover cars more quickly? In the midst of high rates of stolen cars in the area, it's an important question.

"He was in his apartment and he got an alert on his phone that said, 'Your car's moving,'" the woman explained. "So he called the police. They said, 'Well, we'll get back to you in an hour.'"

And the police did get back to him in an hour -- but by then, the car was in Florissant. That meant it was in a new jurisdiction. Her son was told to call the Florissant police.

"He called the Florissant police. And same thing happened. They said, 'We'll check into it.' But by the time they got there it had moved again to Ferguson," she said. "He called and said, 'Here's the new place.' And they said, 'Well, that's not our jurisdiction. We'll have to call the Ferguson Police.' So he called the Ferguson Police. And they said they would check into it. Didn't get to it."

She said she didn't know how many times he had to call, but it was at least half a dozen. Luckily, her son eventually got his car back early Monday morning. But she said it's frustrating, because the reason for getting trackers is to get your car back quickly -- and it wasn't very efficient in making that happen.

She said her daughter's car was eventually found, but it was stripped completely and she didn't end up getting it back, while her son's had some damage but was still driveable.

So what is this woman's conclusion about the effectiveness of car trackers? Listen to her interview on Total Information AM to hear more:
