SAINT LOUIS, MO (KMOX) - An official with the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis says if young women want a voice in public policy, they should take up a career in economics.

"When you think about the kinds of problems and questions that economists deal with in their careers, when they're looking at policies. They make policies. They work with governments to help set policies," points out Assistant Vice President and Economic Education Officer Mary Suiter.

The Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis is sponsoring the Women in Economics Symposium 2022: Leading the Way in Challenging Times the 23rd and 24th. The focus of the keynote address at the virtual symposium is diversity.

"People ask different questions, when you have diversity, you get different questions being asked about a problem or an issue," says Suiter, "you get different potential solutions, and so, I really think that diversifying who's involved in the field will diversity outcomes."

Women have seen the biggest setbacks in their careers during the pandemic.  The Federal Reserve is encouraging high school and college students to consider careers in economics.
