Low crime, college students, families make Edwardsville perfect for new developments

The city of Edwardsville is undergoing a building boom — new homes, apartments, and retail and office buildings are going up all over the city.

James Arnold, the Edwardsville City Director of Development, tells KMOX that last year the city had $170 million in new development — and this year, they're expecting $120 million more. That includes more mixed-use housing.

"Where you're seeing Trace on the Parkway which features over 200 units that you can live in, and you live in there, it's on a bike trail, it's trail oriented, and then you have a number of shops in there — coffee shops, restaurants, retail, boutique shops," Arnold said. "So it's like a new type of living that's not just single family homes."

Arnold said that developers like Edwardsville because of the family demographic, the college students and low crime. Plus, he said, many of the deals are being made without tax breaks for developers.
