Residents within a one mile radius of the Interco Recycling plant in Madison, Illinois were asked to shelter in place for hours Wednesday, after a massive fire overtook the plant on Wednesday morning.
Madison Mayor John Hamm III said over a dozen fire departments, the EPA and the State Emergency Management responded to the blaze. Fire crews remained on scene overnight to ensure nothing reignited.
"They're monitoring right now to be on the safe side both the water and air," Hamm said.
The fire reportedly began when magnesium in the plant came in contact with water. Hamm said that at least one employee was injured.
Smoke rising from the fire reached over 3,500 feet in the air, according to Fox 2 radar.
