Ameren Missouri provides electrical service to 1.2 million customers in the region, and more of them are embracing solar power. Recently, the company touted the ease of adopting solar and highlighted the neighborhoods that are leading the way.

Annemarie Nauert, the renewables program supervisor for Ameren Missouri, told KMOX about the top five neighborhoods supporting solar power over the past three years.

The top five neighborhoods are Tower Grove South, Baldwin, St. Peter's, Shaw, and the St. Louis Hills. Nauert said that the next three were very close to the top — Florissant, Afton and Webster Groves.

"These folks recognize the value of something where they don't have to worry about the headaches of installing it themselves, the maintenance that can come with areas with mature trees, that maybe it's even too much shading for it to even make sense for solar at their homes, and just you know, resale value when it comes to owning your own panels," Nauert said.

People in these neighborhoods don't necessarily have solar panels on their own homes, but they're utilizing the energy from a facility in the area. One of those is at Lambert airport.

"It's just very cost effective to put that all together and allow it to add clean energy on behalf of our members, instead of, you know, mobilizing construction crews to individual homes."

Nauert said she'd love to see more competition for those top five spots in the future, and that it's an easy process to get set up. She said people interested can sign up through their Ameren account.

"We're at this point gathering interests, we're looking for about 10,000 customers at this point to scale this up to the next level. And once we get to that point, we can then move forward to building the new solar field. And, you know, once that goes into service, then your monthly subscription starts. And over time there is that potential for cost savings."
