ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Many Florissant residents hope meeting with the Metropolitan Sewer District (MSD) on Tuesday provides some relief from persistent floods every time there are heavy rains.
One homeowner, who wants to remain anonymous, told KMOX News that since 2013, they have seen raw sewage back up into their home six times, most recently Nov. 4.
"We most recently had two feet of raw sewage in our basement cause by the overcharged main for MSD," said the homeowner. "Some years ago, MSD said 'ok we can install check valves in some peoples houses.'"
"But even in ones with check valves in them, the sewage is still coming up through the basement and they say the only real fix for that is to replace the entire sewer line."
Florissant tells the residents it's not their issue, it's Metropolitan Sewer Districts. KMOX News reach to MSD representative Bess McCoy about it.
"We're certainly looking into the issues that we saw in Florissant area," said McCoy. "We're working very closely with the city on this as well. One thing we are seeing in that area specifically is a lot of issues with ground water."
"The issue with ground water is that it can get into homes even if separated from the public sewer system."
McCoy says the water can also get into the cracks of private lateral lines, meaning the homeowners are responsible for repairs.
If MSD determines the problem is on their end, residents can apply for a one time reimbursement of $2,900 dollars.
On Tuesday night, Florissant residents can head on over to the City Hall Council Chambers at 955 Rue St. Francois Street to attend the City of Florissant Sewer Backup Support and Resource Fair. The fair will take place from 6 -7:30 p.m.
Representatives from the City Engineering Division, Community Development, and the Metropolitan Sewer District will be present at the fair to answer answer questions about recent sewer backups.
