ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Rich Gould has had a longtime presence in St. Louis, serving 34 years as a sportscaster for KPLR 11 before retiring in October 2021.
"Retirements a weird weird thing," said Gould on 'Total Information A.M.' "On one hand it's great fun because you got all this time to do whatever you want and you spent most of your life working nights, Sundays, holidays, so that was always a pain when the kids were little and growing up."
"It's also so incredibly weird because you are not used to anything. I must admit, I feel worthless at times. It's a Wednesday afternoon, I'm done cutting the grass and I look out and there's still six hours of light left and I think 'and now what?' I still grapple with that, but I rather be retired than not."
While he is no longer giving St. Louisans their daily sports news anymore, he has ventured into a new career as a children's book writer.
"When I retired, I said 'you can't just be watching television although I'm very good at it'" said Gould. "My first year and a half, two years of retirement, I got behind the computer, turned the TV off every day. I've written about 120 country music songs, a couple children's book. And this one and I released it earlier this year."
Earlier this year, Gould wrote and published a new children's book called "There’s a Snake Down There." The book, based on a incident that took place in Gould's own childhood, is about how a brave little girl who saves her family while her grandma sleeps through it all.
"I written four or five of them, but this was the one I chose to published first," said Gould. "It's a semi-true story and I really enjoyed writing this one."
Gould's book "There’s a Snake Down There" can be purchased online on Amazon and RGO Books. You can listen to the player above to listen to 'Total Information A.M.' full conversation about the book along with Gould's thoughts on what in happening right now in the world of St. Louis sports.
