Legendary St. Louis Post-Dispatch reporter Rick Hummel recently announced his retirement as a Cardinals beat writer, after 51 years at the paper. He joined KMOX to take a look back at his career.
“My theory was that I would try to inform and entertain the readers and lay out everything for them as far as how I discerned what was going on, and then let them decide for themselves whether they are happy with what's happening or not,” Hummel said on Total Information AM. “I wasn't going to preach to them because it wasn't my job.”
Hummel was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2007 for all his work.
“It was terrifically humbling. And I was one of the last writers to be involved in a ceremony where the players were also involved in the same ceremony,” Hummel said. “Now, these days, they have the writers and broadcasters honored the day before, which is fine too. But I was up there with Tony Gwynn and Cal Ripken Jr. And there were 75,000 people out there.”
Hummel told KMOX about how he got his nickname — “The Commish” — plus his thoughts on the 2023 Cardinals, how he developed sources, and more. Listen to his full interview here:
