Health experts are now recommending a new additional test for cholesterol -- which can be a key indicator for heart disease risk.

This test is for heightened levels of Lipo-protein A -- better known as LP little a -- and only needs to be done once because LP little a levels are inherited.

Cardiologist Dr. Brian Bostick with MU Health Care, "This test has really been shown to be a independent risk factor that helps us identify people who may not have the traditional risk factors of diabetes, high blood pressure. And maybe their blood cholesterol tests doesn't reveal the true risks. This Lipo-protein A test may help us find that additional risk that we could be missing."

The latest American Heart Association guidelines still want us to get our annual lipid panel test -- but say we should talk to our doctors about getting this extra test which is not included in the standard lipid panel.
