ST. LOUIS, MO (KMOX) - The International Insititute St. Louis has received so many donations for incoming Afghan refugees, the organization is asking for volunteers to help sort it.

"At the peak of what we were seeing at least on site in receiving these donations, we as staff members looked around and said we probably have enough stuff for three years worth of supplies to distribute," says Carrie Brickey Brown, International Institute Senior Community Relations Specialist and Volunteer Coordinator. She says now they need to sort it and create an inventory list.
There's now an online sign up for volunteers to help every Tuesday and Wednesday get it ready to distribute when Afghan refugees start arriving next month. Brickey Brown says they're also hearing from scores of people who want to help long-term.
"We've received over 800 applicants, or 800 entries over the last month, from people who want to get involved," she says.
The agency has shifted it's request from donations of items, to donations of grocery gift cards, bus tickets and financial contributions.
"When we're able to provide the basic need amenities, and that's really what they are for the most part, or even an extra handmade blanket or whatever the case may be, it just lends a level of comfort," Brickey Brown says.
