ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - High schoolers in the St. Louis-area will be able to get a sneak peek at career in healthcare and construction Tuesday.

BJC Health Care and St. Louis Works have partnered up to form an initiative to help students learn more about the careers in health care and construction, both industries where there are critical shortages.

STL Works Art McCoy joins Megan Lynch and Tom Ackerman on Total Information A.M. to discuss what STL Works is doing Tuesday to give high school students a look at careers in both healthcare and construction.

According to McCoy, about 30 students will tour the nursing and construction department, as well as tour the trailers with McCarthy, another BJC member and one of the oldest and largest general contractors in the area.

"We'll have students listening to professionals learning about the needs that are there and the jobs and the opportunities and the training and then ultimately matching them to workstations that meet their interest," said McCoy.

McCoy said that response from partners like from BJC have been overwhelmingly positive. McCoy said they previously did a similar program with about 50 students over the summer and BJC Health Care was so impressed they wanted to turn this initiative into a recurring series.

"The response has been amazing," said McCoy, "There's been enthusiasm, support and a commitment to make this an ongoing regular event for real opportunities and jobs for our citizens, our youth in high schools and community colleges like Saint Louis Community Colleges, and beyond."

McCoy says that BJC is committed to offering full rides scholarships to students who choose to go into health care professions as a career.
