Historic St. Louis church struggles to survive

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - The second oldest church in St. Louis is in talks with the Archdiocese to keep the lights on after its current pastor retires.

St. Mary of Victories Hungarian Catholic Church, just south of downtown and east of a highway overpass, surrounded by train trestles and empty warehouses, has only about 30 people attending each of its two Sunday Masses.

The Pastor, Father Brian Harrison, says when he retires soon, the future is uncertain.

"We're working on seeing if we can get another priest to replace me," Harrison said. "There's a big question mark over the future after I leave next year. That's for sure. Because the Archdiocese almost certainly won't be able to send another full-time priest to replace me."

But Harrison says the Archdiocese is "sympathetic" and there's "a good possibility " they can find a visiting priest – or priests – to keep St. Mary of Victories alive.

Built in 1843, St. Mary of Victories Hungarian Catholic Church, is the second oldest church in the city, behind the Old Cathedral.
