The Illinois State Police recently completed a summer firearm enforcement blitz, with over 1,000 people who aren't allowed to have guns brought into compliance.

ISP Director Brendan Kelly called the program a success.

"The Illinois State Police will continue to use every resource at our disposal to keep firearms out of the hands of those individuals who pose a significant risk to themselves or others, while respecting individual rights," Kelly said.

The summertime crackdown checks on those whose FOID cards have been revoked, to make sure they don't have guns. Kelly said there can be a lot of reasons for revoking someone's FOID card.

"This can include being newly convicted of a felony, or making specific serious threats that cause a public safety risk, any number of state or federal firearms prohibitors," he said.

Kelly said the enforcement doesn't stop crime, but calls it an important tool to reduce gun violence.
