ST. CHARLES, Mo. (KMOX) - An investigation is underway at the St. Charles County Jail after an inmate was found unresponsive Tuesday morning.

According to Corrections Director Dan Keen, a 39-year-old man, whose name has not yet been released, arrived May 22 and was detoxing from fentanyl and other drugs.

Around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday morning, the man got out of his bunk to use the bathroom in his cell. When corrections officers made their 15-minute wellness checks, the man had not returned to his bunk and was found unresponsive.

Medical staff began life saving measures with CPR, rescue breaths along with the AED machine until EMS arrived and took over the scene at 4:10 a.m. The inmate was pronounced deceased at 4:45 a.m. by EMS staff.

The Jail says the man was in a single cell by himself, and there has been no evidence that he had committed suicide, or any indication foul play was involved. They also say that no contraband was found and there were no signs he had obtained drugs.

County Police are investigating, and an autopsy will be performed by the County Medical Examiner.
