ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner's office has filed charges against two inmates accused of attacking a guard during a recent riot at the downtown jail.
The charges filed by Gardner's office accuse one inmate of punching a guard in the face several times, as he was being pepper sprayed and refused to get back in his cell. The other inmate is accused of pushing the guard down on the ground.
The guard had minor injuries.
The inmate accused of punching has a heavier charge – a felony count of assault of a special victim. The inmate accused of pushing him down is charged with a misdemeanor.
The downtown St. Louis Justice Center has been the site of multiple violent outbursts by inmates this year. Most recently, a riot broke out on April 5, as inmates set fires, broke out third-floor windows and threw tables, chairs and other debris onto the street below.
On February 19, an inmate began punching and kicking a female lieutenant because he claimed he had not received food “in a timely manner,” according to a police summary.
About two weeks before that, there was another uprising of inmates who broke out windows, set fires and threw plastic chairs and other items onto the sidewalk and street below.
