ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - A new partnership between the City of St. Louis and St. Patrick Center is moving closer towards opening an "intentional" homeless encampment just north of downtown, near the riverfront.

The plan calls for 40 "tiny homes" to be purchased and placed on a vacant lot at First Street and Cass Avenue, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The land is being donated by a private owner and the homes will be purchased with American Rescue Plan Act funds.
A $905,000 contract with the St. Patrick Center for a “homeless intentional encampment project" was approved by the St. Louis Board of Estimate and Apportionment.
Our Charlie Brennan says the key in making it work will be "security."
"Here's the city partnering with St. Patrick Center, that's a good combo," Brennan says. "St. Patrick Center has been around the block quite a few times. But I do think the key is security. If there isn't security there, it could be a disaster waiting to happen."
The idea of "intentional" homeless encampments was something Mayor Tishaura Jones has been pitching since she took office.
The north riverfront encampment is expected to open as soon as the end of January.
