ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - The International Institute of St. Louis explains why they made the decision to shed 60% of its workforce, with the furlough primarily affecting their office on Arsenal Street in St. Louis and it's office in Springfield, Missouri.
KMOX obtained a copy of the "WARN Notice" that was sent to the state of Missouri and to Saint Louis Mayor Tishaura Jones' office, with the notice saying the furlough affected approximately 91 employees and the furlough were effective on Feb. 1.
"We understand that this action may cause concern and inconvenience, and we are committed to providing affected employees with assistance during this transition," said the International Institute of St. Louis.
The Institute says the decision is due to financial difficulties as a result and in compliance with recent executive orders issue by President Donald Trump.
Among the 91 employees that were furloughed included 17 program managers, 25 program coordinators and 14 program assistants.
The International Institute of St. Louis offers essential economic and cultural integration services, including English classes, employment, orientation, and citizenship preparation for new immigrants, refugees and new Americans.
The furlough prompted a mass protest downtown on Saturday.
