ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Jefferson County Sheriff Dave Marshak says his office is investigating a death at the Jefferson County Jail.

At around 9 a.m. Monday morning, Aaron Sarles, 26, died while awaiting for transport to another county.

Sarles was brought to Jefferson County Jail following a traffic stop on Feb. 1. It was later revealed Sarles had an active felony warrant for possession of a controlled substance.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office says there was no abnormalities or foreign objects in Sarles' body as he was put through a body scanner entering the jail.

Sarles, however, showed signs of illness a few hours into his time at the jail. He was taken to a hospital and was declared medically fit for confinement, but he continued to show signs of illness and was later moved to a different housing location where he was monitored by jail medical staff.

Sarles began experiencing a medical emergency and lost consciousness as the jail was preparing him for transport. Sarles was pronounced dead at a hospital. Jail medical staff did try to attempt life-saving measures until EMS arrived.

The Regional Medical Examiner's Office is investigating the cause of Sarles' death while Jefferson County Sheriff Office are conducting interviews and reviewing video footage and documentation related to Sarles' time at the jail.
