Many of us are feeling the pain at the pump.
We reached out to our KMOX Auto expert Greg Damon, General Manager of Sparks Tire and Auto in St. Charles, to ask what can we do to try to stretch that gas in our fuel tanks?
“Don't drive,” says Damon.. “Number one, obviously limit your trips that you go on. Not only that, consolidate your trips that you go on. So don't run multiple errands throughout multiple times of the day. Try to get them all done at one time, and that will certainly help out a lot.”
What else does Damon recommend?
1 - Make sure your tires are properly inflated.
“Not what it says on the tire, but what it says on the door placard.”
2 - Try to eliminate as much weight as possible.
“So if you've got a bunch of stuff in your trunk, got a bunch of golf clubs and boxes and things like that, take all the excess weight out of your trunk, and that will certainly help as well.”
3 - Use cruise control.
“It does help if you are on the highway, and you can maintain that speed for quite some time.
The optimal speed to save fuel is anywhere between 55 and about 65 miles an hour. But if you
can sustain that, that will certainly help you save that much more fuel than being
on the gas, off the gas, on the gas, off the gas.”
4 - No “jack rabbit” starts.
“So when you're sitting in a traffic light, don't take off real fast, just accelerate moderately, accelerate mildly, and get up to speed that way.
That will also help conserve fuel.”
Other suggestions include reducing the amount of time your car idles and getting a tune up,
