After losing the election for Aldermanic President to Megan Green, Alderman Jack Coatar announced he’d be stepping away from politics. In an exclusive interview with KMOX, Coatar explained his decision to leave.

“This was something my wife and I had discussed. When the opportunity arose to run for president of the Board of Aldermen, we made the decision that we're going all in on that race — if we win, great, if we lose, it's time to start a new chapter,” Coatar said. “Election didn't turn out the way I wanted, but life goes on. And so, you know, I suspect I'll stay involved politically, but you know, not as an elected official.”

Coatar also talked about why he thinks he was unsuccessful in the Aldermanic President race. He said running as a more moderate candidate was likely his downfall.

“This city has just gone very far to the left, and has made it clear now they want progressive candidates in office,” he said. “And I'm going to be true to my convictions. And I frankly just don't think some of these progressive policies are right for a city like ours that has so many challenges, and so many crime challenges.”

Coatar talked with KMOX’s Michael Calhoun about the City reentering the County, the problems with Downtown, and more. Listen to his full interview on KMOX:
