ST. LOUIS, MO (KMOX) - COVID has taken a tremendous toll. The last year has brought enormous loss and sacrifice. We're weary and anxious to get beyond the pandemic. KMOX News is searching for answers to the question so many of us have been asking "When Will It End?"
PART ONE - THE MEDICAL END
"I don't know if there's going to be a simple answer to that," says Dr. Alex Garza, Chief Community Health Officer at SSM Health and the Incident Commander for the St. Louis Metropolitan Pandemic Task Force. For more, listen to Part One.
PART TWO - FACE MASKS
Many people also want to know how long we might be wearing face masks and coverings. A poll of roughly 6,000 adults by the University of Southern California found that more than 80% of Americans believe wearing masks is effective against the coronavirus. However that study also found that while most people shopping for groceries have face coverings, far fewer people wear them when they're in close contact in small gatherings.
Earlier this year, Dr. Anthony Fauci suggested we could be wearing masks into 2022. KMOX's Maria Keena had a conversation with the head of the task force overseeing our region's response. To hear that, listen to Part Two.
PART THREE - NURSING HOMES
One of the enduring images of the pandemic shutdown is loved ones visiting family in nursing homes through windows. Now that more Americans are getting vaccinated, are nursing homes completely reopening and getting back to normal? KMOX'S Carol Daniel tells us yes and no in Part Three.
PART FOUR - HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE SPORTS
Athletic programs and the coaches, players, parents and fans who support them have had to be nimble to respond to multiple changes impacting the last year of sports. KMOX's Megan Lynch has more on what insiders are expecting for our local program this fall in Part Four.
PART FIVE - HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE
Since the start of the COVID pandemic, many experts have been looking at history to gain more understanding. KMOX's Sean Michael Lisle reports on how the Spanish Flu could give insight on the end of the current pandemic in Part Five.
PART SIX - MANDATES
KMOX's Megan Lynch asks whether employers can require you to obtain a vaccine, and/or make you return to the workplace in the conclusion of "When will it end?"
