104.1 FM KMOX has won a 2025 National Edward R. Murrow Award, one of broadcast journalism’s highest honors, in the 'breaking news' category for the station's coverage of a multi-faceted weather emergency.

KMOX is the only radio or television station from St. Louis honored with a National Murrow award this year.

In May 2024, storms swamped the St. Louis area, stranding commuters and requiring water rescues on major interstates. Residents in Nashville, Illinois, were told to flee immediately amid fears of an imminent dam collapse. With that town cut off and tornado sirens wailing in the metro, KMOX suspended all programming to deliver continuous, critical information.

First, bulletins came from Debbie Monterrey and Megan Lynch. Then, our Michael Calhoun, staff meteorologist Dave Murray as well as our AccuWeather meteorology team, and veteran traffic expert Rodger Brand went wall-to-wall to provide reasoned, researched information our listeners can act on. Reporters Sean Malone, Maria Keena, and Stuart McMillian mobilized to confirm information and relay first-hand accounts.

The award is presented by the Radio Television Digital News Association and is named for Edward R. Murrow, the celebrated American journalist known for his unflinching integrity from the battlefields of Europe to the television studios of CBS. The award honors modern newsrooms which meet his high standards.

Becky Domyan, Audacy St. Louis' Senior Vice President and Market Manager, emphasizes KMOX's continued role as a trusted voice.

"This award is a powerful acknowledgement of our team’s deep commitment to the St. Louis community and radio’s unwavering ability to connect listeners when they need it most. When the floods hit, our purpose became clear: provide life-saving information and be a calm, trusted voice in a terrifying moment," she said. "We believe in the power of local voices in times of crisis and this recognition validates our team’s hard work in achieving that mission."

This entry progressed to national competition earlier this year after it was one of four Regional Murrow awards won by KMOX in our Midwest zone.
