At a roundtable event this week, St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner announced that she plans to seek reelection, despite the efforts to remove her from office and pushback from community members. But one state representative wants to stop her from being able to run again.
Representative Brad Christ, a Republican from St. Louis County, has introduced legislation that prevents elected officials who are removed from office by the quo warranto process from holding that same office again.
According to a press release, Christ says it's a matter of common sense.
"When we have a crisis situation where the Attorney General has to intervene to restore order, we should respect that process and abide by its results," Christ said. "If our legal process confirms an official isn't fit to hold office, we need to honor the finality of that decision and protect the process from being circumvented simply by running for office again."
Gardner has decried Bailey's removal attempts calling them "baseless," and argues that she deserves to stay in her position because she was democratically elected while Bailey was appointed to his position.
Christ said that if Bailey does successfully remove Gardner from office, he wants the city to "be able to move forward with new leadership that will make it a priority to keep our streets safe and put violent offenders behind bars."
