ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - A bill that would make it a crime to lift the door handle of a car that's not yours has been advanced by the St. Louis Board of Aldermen.

Board Bill No. 61 says anyone found guilty will face up to 90 days in jail and a minimum of $500 fine. The bill hopes to curd car thefts in St. Louis.

Last year, there were 346 carjacking in St. Louis.

The bill, which is sponsored by Ward 16 Alderman Tom Oldenburg, states:
"It shall be unlawful for any individual to lift the door handles or otherwise try 6 the doors and locks of successive vehicles to gain entry to the vehicles unless the individual is the owner of the vehicles or has the owners’ permission to enter the vehicles."

Next, the full Board of Aldermen will consider approval of the bill.
