St. Louis (KMOX) - Local hospitals are reacting to the potential of a COVID-19 vaccine from Pfizer.
Jackie Ferman-Groethe at BJC says in a statement, "The news is encouraging and preliminary plans are being developed for how a vaccine could be distributed once approved by the FDA."
Dr. Marc Shelton is the Vice President and Chief Physician Executive with Hospital Sisters Heath System which includes St. Elizabeth's Hospital in O'Fallon, Illinois says, "Our hospital administrators and emergency management teams have started planning internal distribution options as we continue to work with and support local and state departments of public health during the COVID-19 Pandemic.
Dr. Shelton also says they deliver more than 13,000 flu vaccinations a year and are confident they can do the same with the COVID-19 vaccine.
Shelton does say that while they wait for the vaccine, they are asking the community to be hyper-vigilant in masking, social distancing and hand washing to slow the spread of COVID-19.
Ferman-Groethe is asking the community to support healthcare workers and their community by practicing those same things.
