College women reportedly are turning to GLP-1 medications -- like Ozempic and Wegovy -- to slim down for sorority rush week.
Board certified rheumatologist Dr. Mahsa Tehrani says GLP-1 drugs can be great if used for the right medical reason but she says young people need to know accelerated weight loss can lead to a loss of muscle mass at a time when they need it the most.
"Another issue we're seeing with younger adults taking these is somebody has a constant preoccupation with a number on the scale or they're avoiding food, they need to see a clinician because we don't know what these drugs do to underlying eating disorders," Tehrani says.
Dr. Tehrani says you also need to be careful about where you get the medicine.
"The one thing I advise all my patients about these GLP-1s is do not source them overseas distributors and do not get them from unverified websites because they can always be contaminated."
