A man is dead after a shooting Tuesday afternoon on the entrance ramp connecting westbound I-64/40 to Winghaven Blvd. in O'Fallon, Missouri.
"Around 4 p.m. we received a phone call for a shooting that occurred in that area," Police Captain Mat Wolf tells KMOX. "Officers responded where they found one gentleman who suffered a gunshot and another subject on scene, still on scene."
The man who was shot was pronounced dead at the scene. The second person, who investigators believe may have fired the weapon, remained at the scene when officers arrived.
Investigators believe the shooting stemmed from a road rage incident, though Wolf cautioned the investigation is still in its early stages. It's not yet clear what specifically led to the confrontation, he said.
"We obviously get quite a few calls for minor road rage incidents or other traffic violations, but it is unusual for O'Fallon to get this type of call," Wolf said.
Westbound I-64 remains open, but the entrance ramp to Winghaven from westbound 64 was closed Tuesday afternoon. Wolf said he expects it to stay closed for at least a couple hours into the evening as police continue investigating.
Wolf urged drivers to stay calm behind the wheel.
"Take your time, slow down, be patient," he said. "You're only gonna save yourself a minute or two by driving fast and aggressively."
