ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - A man is in custody for starting a house fire in St. Louis and pulling a knife on firefighters during a more than four-hour standoff.

Authorities say Bernard Jones set a fire yesterday in the basement of his home in the 4500 block of Ashland Avenue. Firefighters responded to the home around 1:30 p.m., but were prevented from entering by Jones who was approaching them with a big knife.

Police shot tear gas into the house to get him to come out. They took him into custody around 6 p.m.

Jones was treated at the scene for exposure to the gas and firefighters dosed the fire from above, according to a St. Louis Post-Dispatch report.
