Megan Green asks Mike Parson to call special session on St. Louis gun crimes

President of the Board of Aldermen says urban gun crimes need urgent attention

St. Louis, MO (KMOX) - St. Louis Aldermanic President Megan Green wants Missouri Governor Mike Parson to help find solutions, after a weekend shooting downtown left one dead, eleven shot and one person trampled.

"I am calling on the Governor to call a Special Session to enact sensible gun legislation," Green said.

Green says urban areas are suffering disproportionately from current gun laws in the state.

"I think there are different viewpoints on this depending on where you live in our state," Green said, "I grew up in a rural area. I grew up in an area where people were taught to hunt from a young age. I think we have to recognize that people's impact with guns, or relationship with guns, is different in different parts of the state."

Green wants a Special Session to enact background checks, permits and a red flag law.

"You know, we see after the tragedy that happened at the Central Visual and Performing Arts School that a red flag law could have prevented that tragedy," Green said.

Two people were killed--a teacher and a student--and seven others were injured when a gunman shot his way into the school in south St. Louis last fall.

Meanwhile, Green says a bill now before the board that would require a concealed carry permit for open carrying is impractical , because she says the "confiscation component" would violate state law, and without that, all police could do is issue someone a $35 fine.
