Every year, KMOX joins other radio and television stations, business and civic leaders for the annual Rise and Shine for Heat Up St. Louis and Heat Up Missouri. This year is no different of course — the event is tomorrow at Hardee's restaurants in the region, where special sausage or egg biscuit sandwiches go for just $1.

This year, Lieutenant Governor Mike Kehoe is the event's honorary chair. He tells KMOX that the program has helped over 1.5 million people since its inception 23 years ago.

"They're doing fantastic work with all of the problems we've had thrown at us in the last couple of years between pandemics and rising heating and fuel costs and electric costs," Kehoe said. "It's something that we can do as an easy way — most people are hungry in the morning, and by the way Hardee's biscuits are darn good. And so you can buy a biscuit and help out your friends and neighbors who might be having a little bit of trouble paying for the utility bill."

Kehoe said there are nearly 600 volunteers helping out tomorrow, and already has $50,000 in the bank with preorders.

Beyond his work with Heat Up St. Louis and Heat Up Missouri, Kehoe talked with KMOX about legislation he's supporting that would limit foreign ownership of farmland. He explained his position on the controversial bill.

"I think most Missourians that are listening to you, no matter if they're rural, urban, Democrat or Republican, believe that the enemies of our country should never be allowed to buy land in the state of Missouri," he said. "If you talk about China, they're one of the main — if not the — sole resources of sending fentanyl across our borders, and killing literally hundreds of people in Missouri and thousands across the country every day. Why in the world would we want them to be able to own land here in Missouri, there's just no good reason."
