Missouri lakes are having an issue with an invasive species... goldfish.

If you thought releasing your pet goldfish in a lake was the humane way to get rid of it... think again.

Dr. Rick Relyea, Director of the Institute of Fisheries at the University of Mizzou, said goldfish are actually an invasive species.

He said they can live for decades, grow up to 60 pounds, and eat "almost anything." That includes insects, snails, and algae. Smaller, native fish just can't compete, and are showing signs of population decline.

Relyea said to try to give your goldfish to a friend or back to a pet store instead of releasing it.
