KANSAS CITY, MO (KMOX) - 63 million Americans are caregivers. The Missouri-based non-profit United WE says a third of those adults are still raising kids while helping aging loved ones. The bulk of caregivers are still trying to hold down a job. Women are believed to be disproportionately impacted. When caregivers have to step back from work, United WE President and CEO Wendy Doyle says that has an impact on their livelihood and their own care needs down the road. "We know women live 6 to 7 years longer than men do. They may be dropping out of the workforce to care for children or family members. This means lack of contributing to retirement funds and to social security."
Doyle says there's also the impact on business losing talent and facing the cost of replacing employees.
United WE is spearheading a new multi-state effort to create new supports and solutions. It includes Missouri, Arkansas, Kansas, and Oklahoma.
The organization says the “Caregiving at Work” series will feature four virtual forums – each tailored to state-specific needs and perspectives – followed by an in-person convening in Washington, DC. The forums are designed to equip participants with actionable tools, elevate caregiver voices, and spotlight employer practices that are working.
