The Housing Authority of St. Louis County will soon be demolishing an aging 70-unit apartment complex in Maryland Heights.

What happens to families living there now? They will be part of a new model for affordable housing.

Federal support for traditional public housing in local communities is going away.

In its place, local housing authorities are looking to a public-private finance model. For this project, officials say they're using the Low Income Housing Tax Credit program -- basically federal tax credits that are awarded to developers who then sell them to private investors. There is also a subsidy from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development.
