Across the street from south St. Louis landmark Bevo Mill, a new development will rise up: Crossroads Senior Living at Bevo Mill.

The affordable senior housing development will offer 64 affordable and market rate apartments for people 62 and older.

"Crossroads is about pride on the south side," said Sean Spencer, executive director of Tower Grove Community Development Corporation (TGCDC). "Neighborhoods are fragile. They are either improving or they're declining. And that's why we focus our work on the ground and in the neighborhoods."

It took a number of years and a number of organizations working with TGCDC to make the project a reality, including Lutheran Senior Services, which will operate Crossroads.

"In 2020, bank leadership made the recognition that this corner was underutilized for the community," said Wes Burns of Midwest BankCentre. "The decision was made to donate this property to Tower Grove CDC, specifically after learning of their interest in bringing quality affordable senior housing to our community."

"There are three main ways our partners believe this project will strengthen Bevo Mill," explained Spencer. "Provide high quality, new construction of affordable housing for for older adults with supportive services, which will allow some lifelong residents of Bevo Mill to stay in Bevo Mill. Number two, the $21-million investment in this prominent corner will attract more investment along this commercial corridor. And number three, Bevo Mill single-family housing freed up by our new Crossroads residents will open the door for new families to call Bevo Mill home as the next generation of city residents."

"It fills my heart to know that the seniors of this community will have a place where they can stay and grow old and have help and be part of it still," said an emotional Carol Howard, former alderwoman. "It's a very, very tight community."
