ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - A new work of art has been unveiled to mark the 100th anniversary of St. Louis Lambert International Airport.
'Dream Beyond the Clouds' is a glass mural celebrating the airport's founder, Maj. Albert Bond Lambert.
Lambert's great-grandaughters Lea Bender and Kim Lambert were on hand for the unveiling. Bender calls the work by Martin Donlin, stunning, "Martin kind of went through the history of the airport, starting when Kinloch Field, which it was formerlly known as, was hosting hot air balloons. Then, there's a portrait of our great-grandfather. There's a reference ot his passion for golf."
That reference to golf is a golf ball placed amidst planets on the mural. There's also a depiction of Lambert in a plane with one of the Wright Brothers, who built the plane for him and taught him to fly.
"We're just so appreciative that our great-grandfather is being remembered and the history of the airport has come to life in such a vibrant, incredible artistic way," says Bender.
Lambert, who hadn't met Bender until Thursday night, says, "Just the history of what it must have been like back in those days to accomplish so much. Just to be around the beginning parts of flying. It's just remarkable."
The mural is across from entry door 4 on the upper level of Terminal One.
