The newly-elected Board of Aldermen will be sworn in Tuesday, marking a historic day as the board shrinks from 28 aldermen to 14. About half of the 14 are progressives.
Outgoing moderate Democrat Jack Coatar says the amount of progressives on the board concerns him.
“I think the progressive caucus, they're gonna have a rude awakening when the federal funds dry up and they've gotta govern the city, and they've gotta balance the budget, and they're gonna realize that there's more money going out than there is coming in,” Coatar said.
But outgoing progressive Alderman Annie Rice says the new wave of progressives is a good thing for the city.
“I think that we’re set up for hopefully some good success for the city going forward,” she said. “14 is going to be a change, it was always going to be a change.”
Many say the new Board President Megan Green is running an organized office, and they’re watching to see who she’ll appoint to run the Aldermanic committees that control the flow of legislation.
