Just in time for Christmas, a local organization that helps refugees moving to St. Louis is offering a dessert package of international cookies made by refugee and immigrant chefs. The bakers hail from Afghanistan, Syria and Morocco and will be filling boxes with things like Syrian baklava, Afghan semolina cookies and Moroccan coconut macaroons.
Welcome Neighbor STL is an organization that started in 2016 and is currently helping around 300 refugees from 11 different countries. The organization's supper club coordinator, Zohra Zaimi, told KMOX more.
"We try to find ideas and ways to help our immigrants and refugees to get involved in our program," she said. "So the holiday cookie boxes are one of the ideas that we try to do with our chefs."
You can order a box of cookies on Welcome Neighbor STL's website. 90% of the money for a bag goes directly to the chefs, and 10% goes to the organization so they can help provide supplies.
