A nurse who admitted to stealing fentanyl from Mercy South Hospital has been sentenced to four years on probation including drug treatment.

31-year-old Lindsay Maupin of Cape Girardeau admitted to stealing the medical fentanyl on several occasions during a personal crisis in winter of 2020. Assistant U.S. Attorney Amy Setrick says it's a temptation that many medical workers face.

"We've seen a lot of pharmacy technicians both in a retail pharmacy setting or in hospitals, many nurses, and certainly doctors are not immune either," she said.

Judge Stephen Clark, who has a reputation for being tough, surprised some when he announced the probation. But he also warned Maupin not to violate her probation, saying that doing so could lead to prison time.
