O'Fallon police drone catches kids tossing candy onto I-70

O'Fallon police drone catches kids tossing candy onto I-70
O'Fallon Missouri Police Department

O'Fallon, Missouri police say a drone helped them track down three juveniles who were throwing candy off of an Interstate 70 overpass. They're also warning that what might seem like a harmless prank could have deadly consequences.

According to police, a driver called 911 after something hit her windshield while she was driving on I-70 beneath the Sonderen Street overpass. She told dispatchers she wasn't sure what was falling onto the highway.

While officers were on the way, the department's drone spotted three juveniles while bicycles on the overpass. Drone video released by police appaers to show one of them tossing something over the fence and onto the highway below.

Officers stopped the group, and police say all three admitted to throwing candy off the overpass. They were released to their parents. No vehicles were reported damaged.

Police did not say when the incident happened, release the juveniles' ages, or say whether any charges are being considered.

The department says the incident should serve as a warning.

"Throwing anything off an overpass and into traffic is incredibly dangerous, no matter how small the object may seem," police said in a social media post.

Officers say even a piece of candy can startle a driver, block their view, or cause a sudden reaction that leads to a loss of control at highway speeds.

"What might seem like a joke or harmless prank could have life-altering consequences for an innocent driver and everybody else on the road," the department posted.
