State control over city police, or an appointed violent crime prosecutor? Senator says it'll be one, not both

There are two bills that hope to reduce crime in St. Louis that are making their way through the legislature. But Senate President Caleb Rowden says it looks like one or the other will pass — not both.

One of the bills being considered would put the St. Louis police back under state control, and the other would allow the Governor to appoint a special prosecutor to handle violent crime cases.

Rowden told KMOX sister station 97.1 FM that political divisions won't allow both bills to go through.

"It's unlikely that you'd get everything," he said. "As you can imagine, St Louis city Democrats are not thrilled with any of these things. And so I think we have to figure out, we have to ask the question, what's the best thing to do in the short term?"

Rowden said he expects spirited debate over which proposal would do the most good the soonest when it comes to reducing violent crime.
