Parson teacher raise plan squashed

Gov. Parson: Missouri has the lowest average starting pay for teachers in the country.

St. Louis (KMOX) Governor Mike Parson's plan to give K-12 public school teachers a raise is scuttled by the Missouri House. The House Budget Committee has removed Parson's proposal that would have boosted the minimum pay from the current level of $25,000 up to $38,000 annually.

"This impacts the entire state, you know. From rural areas to urban areas you just can't continue to cut funding then expect to have positive results. It's just not going to happen," says Byron Clemens of the St. Louis City Teacher's Union Local 420.

The Chairman of the committee that took out the raises, Carthage Republican Cody Smith, argued the raises were "unsustainable," because there was money for them now, but not a long-term funding source.
