Even in the face of inflation, a large number of Americans have reported that they're spending themselves into debt just to impress others.
According to a survey by Lending Tree, nearly 40% of people say they overspent on clothes, vacations and other splurges. They reported wanting to feel successful, impress family or friends, or even to impress a date. Many of those say they had debt related to that spending.
As for the things they're overspending on, it mostly fell on things like clothes, shoes, gifts and fancy dinners.
Younger generations were most likely to overspend to keep up appearances. 77% of the people surveyed said they regret it.
