ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - The Saint Louis Zoo is sharing the great news of a successful rescue they partnered in to protect nine endangered giraffes – including a three-month-old calf — in Kenya.

The Zoo says after months of work with a number of organizations in the African nation they've been able to save the group of Rothschild’s giraffes from their flooded island. They are now safe in their new 4,400-acre home at the sanctuary at Ruko Community Conservancy.

The rescue was made possible with the construction of a handmade barge, or "GiRaft," which required plenty of "finesse, innovation and coordination."

"The project is one example of Saint Louis Zoo’s work around the world, helping both wildlife and local communities: supporting local workers clearing the fence line for the new sanctuary," the Zoo stated on Facebook.

They worked with the Ruko Community Conservancy, Northern Rangelands Trust, Kenya Wildlife Service and Save Giraffes Now to rescue the giraffes.
