Crime, drugs and high-piled trash near the Schnucks on South Grand has the grocery chain suggesting they may shut down the location. But neighborhood leaders are asking them not to. Instead, they're hoping Schnucks will support a Community Improvement District.
In a letter to Schnucks attorney Ed Penney, the nearby residents wrote that they want the store to contribute $10-15,000 a year to the CID, with money going towards security, trash pickup and beautification.
The group said much for the trash in the area comes from the store's customers. They added that they'd like the Schnucks on South Grand to be just as nice as the one on the Hill, just a couple miles away.
The consortium wants Schnucks to come to the table with solutions, rather than just leaving. They ended their letter saying: "We find it bothersome that when presented with legitimate community concerns, your response is to threaten store closure."
